His worth to the team was evident in his performance against Tottenham.
Having started in the middle of the park, Wijnaldum had a brilliant game defensively as well as moving the ball forward.
According to Squawka Football, he made 12 ball recoveries throughout the game, which was four more than any other Liverpool player.
With Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both forced out of the midfield to play in defence in the absence of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Wijnaldum’s defensive efforts are vital.

Thiago Alcantara adopted a key role on Thursday against Tottenham, and the two played slightly higher in the midfield along with James Milner.
And speaking afterwards, Klopp heaped praise on the three central midfielders.
He said: “Today we played a slightly different position, worked together with Millie and Gini on [the] six really well. That was a proper, proper performance. I know Thiago can be much better than tonight, but it was just an important step for all of us.
“The situation with Thiago was not easy: he came to Liverpool late, then ill, then injured, then playing immediately in a very decisive position. We thought for tonight it might make sense to play him slightly higher on the pitch.”
