Thiago Alcantara: Liverpool and Man Utd links debated by pundit
Thiago Alcantara was reportedly all set to sign a lucrative new contract at Bayern Munich before he had his head turned by Liverpool's interest. Thiago has joined Liverpool on a four-year deal after months of speculation surrounding his future.
There had initially been no indication from Thiago's camp that he wasn't going to sign an extension at Bayern heading into the final year of his contract.
But negotiations stalled earlier this summer with Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirming Thiago had made it clear he wanted a new challenge.
Reports in Germany immediately linked Liverpool as his next destination, but the Reds were quick to try and shut down any rumours.
Jurgen Klopp indicated repeatedly that any big-money signings at Anfield would be highly unlikely due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Kostas Tsimikas was signed early in the window for just £11.75million, coming in as cover for Andy Robertson.
It was reported that Liverpool would only go after signings that were deemed necessary, further suggesting bringing in another midfielder to Klopp's array of options would be unlikely.
But the Reds have now snapped up Thiago in a deal going against their usual transfer policy of targeting younger players.
A friend of Thiago's family confirmed to The Athletic that Liverpool did in fact make contact with Thiago over three months ago.
And they claimed their interest was the defining reason why Thiago wanted to leave Bayern.
“Earlier this year, it seemed certain that he was going to extend his contract with Bayern Munich but then Liverpool’s interest escalated and this suddenly changed everything," they said.
“The serious talks only began around three months ago with Liverpool.
“There has been speculation about Manchester United but Liverpool’s interest was absolutely clear and direct from the beginning.
