Yet now their reporter Vinny O'Connor claims the deal won't be happening.
"From what we have been hearing, even going back to the January transfer window, this one is very unlikely," he said in a Liverpool Q&A on Sky Sports.
"During the last window I was told Liverpool had no plans to sign him then and no plans to sign him in the summer and recently that message was repeated with regards to when the next window opens.
"There has always been the caveat that Liverpool would be silly not to keep tabs on one of European football's hottest properties.

"Judging by the talk from Werner himself, it's a move he clearly fancies.
"The noises coming out of Anfield are that this one is not going to happen."
The update will not be gratefully received by Liverpool supporters, who were beginning to believe that Werner would be at Anfield next season.
The Reds appeared to be at the front of the queue for him signature and he has talked up the switch at every given opportunity in recent months.

RB Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche believes the coronavirus could impact Werner's future with the transfer market set to feel the effects of the COVID-19 crisis.
“It is clear that Timo has attracted interest from other clubs for his great performances with his goals and assists,” Krosche told Sport1.
“England has the same problems as we do. The crisis affects not just one league, it has a global impact, and we cannot say whether things will be the same in six months.
“Everything is possible. We do not know how the transfer market is developing. We are looking into a very foggy glass ball.
"We do not know what our resources are and what the other clubs have in terms of opportunities.”
