The Senegal international still plays a big role in Bambali life.
He has helped to fund construction projects throughout the village, including a two-story high school.
But, whenever he visits his hometown, the striker is keen to readapt to his old life, without the fuss of being a global icon.
“If Sadio comes around here, he behaves very humbly, on a level with the people here in Bambali,” said President of the Regional League, Fode Boucar Dahaba.
