But Marcus Rashford made sure of the win in the 66nd minute - and squandered a glorious chance to add another late on.
Regarding Williams, and United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted with the performance of the teenager.
“Brandon was excellent,” he said when asked about the youngster.
“He’s played well before, but first start at Old Trafford in a Premier League game, you don’t know how he’s going to react.
“But he was looking forward to it. I told him on Thursday just look forward to this one, I thought it was more fair to him when he’s playing his first game that he didn’t play on Thursday, so excellent performance.
“He’s done nothing wrong since he’s come in and making it hard for me [to leave him out], definitely.
“He’s really, really impressed me, I have to say. He’s making it hard to leave him out.
“Quite a few of the fans that have been here, young boys maybe, have been here thinking, ‘I want to be like Williams, I want to be like Martial, I want to be like Rashford.’
“But these are young boys as well so it’s still gonna be ups and downs and today was definitely a game you start on front foot, get your confidence and then it’s, ‘how many are we going to get?’”
