Jason Cundy explains why he is more excited about Frank Lampard's Chelsea than ever before
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has given a chance to a number of the club’s academy graduates this season.
Chelsea: It’s an ‘exciting’ time to be a fan claims Cundy
Chelsea fan and former Blues defender Jason Cundy is more excited about his club now than he can remember.
Frank Lampard’s side are currently fifth in the Premier League table after eight top-flight matches this season.
However, it is not the league position that excites Cundy, but the fledgling youngsters Lampard is exposing to the demands of the English top flight.
Mason Mount has started every league game so far, Tammy Abraham is the division’s joint top scorer and Fikayo Tomori’s performances in defence have earned him a first call-up to the senior England side.
Being a Chelsea fan, this is as excited as I’ve been about seeing these young players come through as I can remember
And Cundy says no Chelsea fan can be disappointed with the direction Lampard is taking the club.
“Listen, this is nowhere near the finished article,” Cundy said on talkSPORT.
“We have a group of youngsters right now that are going to be in and around Chelsea’s first XI for many years to come and it’s an exciting time for a Chelsea fan, really exciting.
“For years people have slaughtered Chelsea and they’ve been hammering us about ‘oh, you’re not bringing players through, and the ones you do you send out on loan’.
“All of those players, except from Callum Hudson-Odoi, have been out on loan, got the experience, now they’ve come back and now that Chelsea are giving these young players an opportunity, you’re slaughtering them.
“He doesn’t have to play Tammy. [Lampard could pick Olivier] Giroud, what would [Maurizio] Sarri have done? [Or Michy] Batshuayi.
“The point I’m making is Frank is showing these young players a pathway through and right now, being a Chelsea fan, this is as excited as I’ve been about seeing these young players come through as I can remember.
“Right now, there is not a Chelsea fan out there that doesn’t have genuine hope, genuine belief that this could be a special bunch of players.
“These are young kids, some of these kids are making their Premier League debuts.
“They’re only going to get better and every game I’ve seen improvement, every single game.”
