Jose Mourinho goaded Man Utd chiefs into sacking him when he did one thing - Sheringham
JOSE MOURINHO goaded Manchester United chiefs into sacking him, according to Red Devils legend Teddy Sheringham.
Jose Mourinho lost his job at Manchester United last week with the Red Devils choosing to put the 55-year-old out of his misery.
The Portuguese had spent the last few months worsening the mood around Old Trafford with performances on the pitch suffering as a result.
Mourinho has been replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, with the Norwegian already making his mark.
United were at their swashbuckling best on Saturday as they battered Cardiff 5-1 in Wales, with Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera all on target.
And Sheringham believes Mourinho paid the price for goading club chiefs when he insisted it would cost too much to sack him.
“It looked for me as if Jose was ready for the sack,” Sheringham told Love Sport Radio.
“He’s been saying the wrong things for me for the last six or seven months.
“Even about eight or nine months ago, Mourinho came out and said ‘United can’t sack me, they can’t afford to.
“For me that was goading the people above him.
“And ever since then he was talking about how good other teams are despite spending £400million.
“If you can’t get a good team out of that then you really are struggling.”
Meanwhile, United legend Gary Neville believes Solskjaer is the ideal Mourinho replacement for the time being.
“You can see Manchester United have made an appointment to create a happy ship and make sure someone who came in had respect through the whole club and knew the whole club and could connect the club," Neville said on his podcast.
"There's no doubt it was an unhappy place.
“There were obvious tensions with certain players that became public, then the fans were going to the stadium feeling like every game was a crossroads or one minute away from something big happening, so it wasn't a huge shock."
United are next in action against Huddersfield on Boxing Day (3pm).
The Red Devils won the same fixture 2-0 last season.
