Liverpool are unbeaten in the Premier League and can go back to the top with a victory today after Manchester City beat Everton on Saturday.
The signs just look like it’s a long road ahead for Man United
Despite Manchester United’s poor start to the season, Keane says they are still capable of claiming big results.
However, he says the defence, which has conceded 26 goals in 16 games this season, is the biggest concern going forward.
“There’s a worry because I think defensively they look really, really short,” Keane said on Sky Sports.
“I still think United have a lot of good players, I still think they’re capable of winning a lot of football matches.
“But in terms of winning the big prizes, they look short.
“For any big club, obviously we’re talking about Man United and Liverpool, you’ve got to eventually get your hands on some trophies.
“But I think the scary thing for me when you look at where United are at now - I think it’s alright when you can finish second or third because you’re competing you can’t win every game and every trophy - but they’re so far behind in points, the goals for, goals against.
“The signs just look like it’s a long road ahead for Man United.
“There’s all the chat about Mourinho getting players on side.
“But I still go back to it, I think defensively they look so short.
“You need a solid back four, an outstanding goalkeeper, the foundations to go on.
“United don’t look like they have that.”
Mourinho has drawn 0-0 on both of his trips to Anfield as United boss before today's match.
Paul Pogba was named on the bench for the game.
