Thomas Tuchel enthused about the privilege of coaching at Old Trafford when visiting Manchester United in the Champions League with Bayern Munich last season. In as little as a couple of weeks, the German could be in the United dugout on a permanent basis if Erik ten Hag is sacked as manager in the coming days.

Tuchel is available after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, unlike multiple of the Red Devils' reported replacement targets.

The former Chelsea boss already held talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the summer before Ten Hag was handed the opportunity of a third season to improve a largely woeful 2023/24 campaign.

Those discussions could be reignited soon if a miserable start to the season has convinced United's hierarchy to make a change.

Tuchel is reportedly being lined up as Ten Hag's successor ahead of Tuesday's executive meeting in London, with Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer among those set to attend.

He boasts a winning pedigree, including the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea, and experience coaching in the Premier League.

And the 51-year-old has previously made no secret of his admiration for United and the club's iconic Old Trafford stadium.

Ahead of last term's Group A curtain-closer between United and Bayern in M16, Tuchel raved about having the chance to work on such a stage.

"No one puts their feet up in Old Trafford. It's one of the biggest stages in world football," Tuchel said with a smile on TNT Sports.

"It's a very special atmosphere, and I'm happy to have the privilege to be on the sideline for a Champions League match at Old Trafford.

"So on these kind of occasions, you need to bring the best out of yourself and out of our team. It's normal. Nothing else matters."

He added: "If you play at Old Trafford, there is a sense of a very special football stage. And there is a sense of a very special occasion.

"I'm very sure that none of the players would accept to just rest for the sake of resting or due to the situation in the table.

"These are the stages, and these are the matches that you absolutely want to play."

Tuchel is currently the favourite to succeed Ten Hag should he lose his job during or after the October international break.

Ruud van Nistelrooy - appointed as his assistant in the summer - is also strongly linked with an initial interim role.
