Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid claim made following Juventus summer transfer
CRISTIANO RONALDO’s summer switch from Real Madrid to Juventus was good for player and club.
Real Madrid: Toni Kroos speaks out on Cristiano Ronaldo transfer
That’s the view of legend Diego Maradona, who believes Florentino Perez made the right decision by selling Ronaldo.
Ronaldo ended his nine-year stay at the Bernabeu during the summer by making an £88million switch to Turin.
He departed just weeks after helping Real Madrid to their third Champions League title in a row.
Ronaldo started slowly at Juventus but has begun to flourish now and scored against former club Manchester United last week.
And while Maradona acknowledges Real are missing Ronaldo, he believes the move will work out as a positive for both parties.
“I think that it was a good move for Cristiano,” Maradona told Marca.
“He gave his all to Madrid, he wasn't enjoying it as much as he does now in Italian football and Florentino is always planning.
“When he saw Ronaldo was only getting a goal a game he sold him.
“Clearly yes [Real are missing Ronaldo], but I always say that a player doesn't make a club.
“Madrid will recover, they will win again, they have a great squad but the truth is that CR7 continues to score goals and people will say why was he sold.
“I always say that Florentino is clever and if he let him go it was for a reason.”
Real Madrid struggled following the departure of Ronaldo with Julen Lopetegui recently sacked after poor results.
And Ronaldo’s rival Lionel Messi believes the winger’s departure has led to a closer La Liga.
“It’s good that the league is more competitive than ever,” Barcelona ace Messi said.
"Nothing is easy, anyone can beat anyone and I hope it continues like that for some time.
“I am always more interested in the importance that goals have rather than how good they look.”
