Champions League will be open this season says pundit
The draw for the group stage of the Champions League gets underway in Monaco on Thursday and following the defeat to Brighton on Sunday, the last thing he’ll be wanting is a draw against the current champions.
But the Red Devils face the prospect of drawing the Bernabeu giants with Madrid in Pot 1 and United in Pot 2.
Twenty-six teams have already secured their spot in the draw with a further six to be added following the conclusion of the qualifying ties this week.
The worst possible draw for United would see them face Real Madrid, Monaco and Inter Milan.
Pot 4: PSV Eindhoven, Viktoria Plzen, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Dinamo Zagreb, Inter Milan, AEK Athens

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho's side won the Europa League last season (Image: GETTY)
The Champions League group matches begin on the week commencing September, 17.
United progressed through the group stages of the Champions League last year but were knocked out in spectacular fashion to Sevilla in the last-16.
With the first leg conjuring up a goalless draw in Seville, a lacklustre United display led to Wissam Ben Yedder's second-half brace sending them out of the tournament.
However, the Red Devils soon found form in the Europa League as a result of crashing out, eventually beating Ajax in the final to win the competition and book themselves a spot in this season’s Champions League.
Before United find out their fate in the draw, Mourinho will be looking to get back to winning ways when they host Tottenham on Monday night (8pm).
