Vera star emotional as he makes sad announcement about final series

Earlier this year, Vera fans were left devastated after Brenda Blethyn announced she was hanging up her iconic mack and hat for good.

Vera star Riley Jones, who has played Mark Edwards since the beginning of the series, shared an emotional update with fans. The actor took to his X account where she explained he was about to finish filming his final scenes of Vera.

He penned: "Heading up to Newcastle to film my last few scenes for Vera and reading this article by @Graemethedean Weird that someone is chopping onions on the train."

Fans rushed to the comments section to share their sadness over Riley's post, with one commenting: "The very best TV show ever. I have watched every episode several times over. Vera calms me. She will be sorely missed!"

One fan replied: "Love this. You’re all so bl***y awesome!"

A third added: "I'm so upset that we won't see Vera anymore. Only 2 more episodes of this fabulous show to go."

Someone else penned: "It's going to be such a shame I never got to meet you Riley. My garden wall is still there if you need a project later on. Take care Ange from Blyth Xx." (sic)

Joining Mark to film his final scenes will also be Rhiannon Clements, who plays DC Stephanie Duncan.

ITV confirmed the actress would be returning after fans feared the star wouldn't be coming back as she has been busy with other work commitments.

The upcoming series which will air early next year will be the cast and Brenda Blethyn's final episodes.

Brenda opened up about her decision to exit, stating: "Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I'm sad to be saying Cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years."

She expressed her deep appreciation: "I'll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role."

The award-winning actress also praised her team: "The Producers, dream cast, and crew have been fabulous and I'm going to miss them, but I won't forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the northeast and our fans worldwide."

Vera will return to ITV in 2025.
