Maguire is among a handful of targets which United chiefs are looking at but his £80million price tag is proving a little offputting.
However, if the tide turns and Mourinho eventually lands the former Sheffield United man then Schmeichel has no doubt he will be able to cope with the pressure.
“I don’t think it’s going to be Maguire’s year, I think it’s going to be his decade,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports News.
“Over the next 10 years or so, when he’s hitting his prime, he’s going to be one of the best defenders in the world, I think.

“He’s got every attribute you could want in a defender. He’s an exceptional football player, very intelligent, he can see a pass and pick it out as well.
“Positionally, he’s very astute, very clever. He’s a big lad, so on set-pieces both for and against, he’s a threat.
“For me, Harry can go as far as he wants. The year that I’ve worked with him says everything, he was player of the year here last season, players’ player of the year, it says everything about his level last season.
“With his work ethic, his attitude, I’m in no doubt that he’s going to kick on this season and then he’s going to be established as one of the best, if not the best, defender in the Premier League.”
