Katherine’s character, Hannah Baker, was central to the storyline of season one but will take more of a backseat when the show returns.
Furthermore, the actress warned fans that the character they will see in the second run will be very different to the one they met in the first series.
Speaking on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this month, Katherine explained: “It was a very different season to season one for a lot of reasons.
“But I’m super grateful to be asked back, because I think there’s so much left to tell and I’m really glad we got to focus on some important storylines for other characters.”
She continued: “The Hannah in season one is gone.
“She is still there this season, but I would prepare audiences to see a different Hannah this season.”
Her comments came after executive producer Brian Yorkey hinted that the other students at Liberty High will be given the chance to tell their side of the story.
“There are at least 12 kids that have another version of those events that we haven’t really heard from yet, so I think there’s quite a bit more of Hannah’s story to tell,” he commented.
“I don’t think Hannah told any untruths on her tapes. I think she told her story and she claimed her narrative.”
Brian later noted: “I think season two will give us a look at a lot of things - a lot of the events that we think we know, we may learn are more complicated than we thought, and Hannah is even more complicated than we saw in season one.”

Brian previously revealed that the Netflix series will focus on Jessica Davis’ (played by Alisha Boe) sexual assault.
Jessica was raped by her classmate Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice) during a party and the second run will see her make the journey from victim to survivor.
“We wanted very much to look at her recovery,” Brian told Radio Times.
“To look at what it is to go from being a victim of sexual assault to being a survivor of sexual assault.”
Meanwhile, fans are speculating about the release of the second series.

Many believe that Netflix could surprise viewers by dropping season two on the streaming service this weekend.
March 31 marks one year since the first series premiered.
However, it is very unlikely season two will arrive this weekend as a special preview events is currently being held in Los Angeles.
Fans who have been granted access to watch the second series before it airs were required to give up three days for the screenings, which run from March 30 to April 4.
