EMMERDALE’S Charity Dingle entered into a tentative romance with fellow villager Vanessa Woodfield on the soap recently, and now actress Emma Atkins has revealed what’s next for the pair.

Emmerdale staple Emma, who plays pub landlord Charity, has been an integral part of the ITV soap for nearly 18 years.
Yet her new lesbian relationship with the fiery Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) is a first for the mother-of-three.
While many fans have taken to the pair’s sizzling chemistry, others have been confused at the apparently sudden turnaround in Charity’s preferences.
In a new video from soap bosses, the actresses sat down to talk about “what makes an iconic Emmerdale couple”, and it was revealed that Charity and Vanessa won’t be leaving behind trouble in paradise just yet.

Chatting directly to the camera, Emma explained: “[I think it’s] troubled love. You’ve got to have complexities haven’t you when you’ve got interesting relationships going on.
“Charity and Vanessa for one,” she said with a glint in her eye.
The actress went on to share exactly why she continues to enjoy playing Charity so much.
“It’s much more interesting to play a character that has many complexities,” she admitted, while Michelle continued: “Emmerdale is really good at not shying away from alternative love stories.”

In terms of the conflicting reception the actresses have received since the storyline began airing however, Emma assured fans she wasn’t fazed.
In fact, she relished the reaction, saying: “I think in terms of Charity and Vanessa they are an obvious example of what a modern-day couple are, aren’t they?"
“Some people are, ‘Oh you know this is ridiculous’, but then some people are [like], ‘I love it.’”
Not afraid to ruffle feathers, the Charity actress continued to share her excitement at having such a supposedly “controversial” storyline to play.

“I quite like the fact that it’s creating such a stir,” she revealed. “Because these relationships that supposedly don’t work are working, and everyone’s nosy and going, 'How’s that happening?'”
Agreeing with her co-star, Michelle added: “It’s good for everyone at home to see that they can work and they do.”
