The BBC’s landmark seven-part nature series, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, attracted viewers of up to 17million and was the most watched programme of the year when it aired between October and December this year.
The epic follow-up documentary to the award-winning 2001 series was filmed over a four year period across 39 countries and regularly made the nation’s jaws drop with its breathtaking close-up shots of marine life.
Highlights included never-before-seen footage of a fish changing sex and a giant trevallies fish leaping out of the water to catch an Arctic tern in their jaws.
The series was filmed across a four-year period
Sir David, 91, said of the series: “These developments in filming allow us to enter new worlds and shine a light on behaviours in ways that were impossible just a generation ago.”
The annual poll by the magazine’s critics also revealed it has been a bumper year for homegrown talent with British dramas dominating the top 10.
Jed Mercurio’s police corruption series Line of Duty came in second place, with American drama series Big Little Lies third.
Netflix hugely popular royal biopic The Crown was in fourth place, ITV’s third series of Broadchurch was placed seventh, and BBC dramas Doctor Foster and Apple Tree Yard ranked ninth and tenth respectively.
Mark Frith, Radio Times editor, said: “It’s been the most incredible 12 months for TV, but in the end Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet 2 won our critics poll by quite a margin.”
Last year’s winner was spy drama The Night Manager starring Tom Hiddleston.
