The comedian caused a meltdown on Twitter, with It Takes Two viewers applauding him for his comments about Paul Daniels’ widow as well as the other contestants.
The 58-year-old was branded a “proper contender” by the actor despite being cast as the older female “character” in the BBC competition.
Shocking host Zoe Ball and his fellow guest stars Simon Webbe and Jodie Prenger, the 38-year-old started: “Debbie’s my favourite, because every year you know that there’s going to be certain characters that get cast.
“This is the older lady category. We all know, about six weeks in and normally paired up with Anton [Du Beke], you’re going to say goodbye and off you pop.”

Despite it being pointed out that Katie Derham, 47, made it to the final, Rufus continued: “It really feels like Debbie is a proper contender, I don’t care that she danced back then… or she’s done this training, that training…”
“I grew up with Debbie McGee,” he said, amusing his companions, before joking: “We shared a wet nurse! But she was always in the shadows and this is her stepping forward.”
He added: “It’s a lovely thing to watch. She could go all the way,” before the micro-blogging site was inundated with many agreeing with his honest statement.
