The 39-year-old presenter was apparently seen smirking as he broke the news that a rare tropical bird had died after getting washed up on British shores.
Norman the Booby - a rare species of bird native to the Cayman Islands - was found in Hastings back in December and was nursed back to health.
Although it is not known how Norman had ended up on the Sussex beach, he was flown back home on a 12-hour flight but sadly died.
Countryfile host Matt was heard telling the audience: “Well, it all seemed so positive, didn’t it?”
He continued: “But I have some bad news, everyone. Since Mike filmed that a couple of months ago, we’ve heard some very sad news that Norman has died.
“Now, he needed warm weather to survive, he was flown out to the Cayman Islands but unfortunately he didn’t make it out of quarantine.”
He added: “Sorry to have to tell you that.”
However, people watching the BBC programme at home were less than impressed by the host’s delivery of the sad story and took to social media to slam him.

“I don't like Matt baker off The One show, why did he take such pleasure telling us the bird died, after getting lots of help,” posted one person.
Another tweeted: “#Mattbaker just broke my heart.. that lovely story and then he tells me that actually the poor bird is dead #theoneshow.”
A third added: “@BBCTheOneShow Thanks for ruining my evening Matt Baker! Norman's passing deserved far more gravitas. #ripnorman #gonebutnotforgotten.”

This is not the first time that Matt has attracted the ire of viewers, he was previously criticised after he was seen pulling apart a dead pheasant on Countryfile.
Matt was seen stepping on the wings of one of the dead creatures as he ripped out the pheasant’s feet.
Shortly before Matt started tearing the animal apart, he told viewers: “And a quick warning: if you’re squeamish, look away now.”
