DOCTOR WHO actor and writer Mark Gatiss has revealed a major character is returning to the BBC sci-fi series after Peter Capaldi announced his departure as the Time Lord yesterday.

The 50-year-old held up a figurine of a Doctor Who villain and confessed that their return is imminent.
Following 50 years after their first appearance on the hit show, the Ice Warriors are coming back.
In a video posted on the BBC's Doctor Who website, Mark said: "Good evening, it's time to welcome back some old friends.
"I'm bringing back the Ice Warriors again. One of my favourite monsters. It's a thrill a minute. A sort of Bank Holiday Monday feel, the kind of Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs story of derring-do, which I've always loved.

"@bbcdoctorwho @Markgatiss Excellent! Very upset Peter is leaving so it's nice to at least see the Ice Warriors return," said a fourth.
It came after current Doctor Peter announced on Jo Whiley's show last night that he would be stepping down from the role at the end of the year.
BBC Radio 2 DJ Jo tweeted: "I wasn't expecting to regenerate a Doctor this evening! Peter Capaldi announces he's to leave @bbcdoctorwho Xmas 2017 @BBCRadio2. Sobs."
Mark added: "Profoundly sad that the wonderful Peter Capaldi is leaving at the end of the year. But he is - and always will be - a great Doctor Who."
Doctor Who returns to BBC One on April 15.
