Craig Revel Horwood says 'weight has been lifted' over Strictly

Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood has revealed that he is “pleased” by the outcome of a BBC investigation into the conduct of professional dancer Giovanni Pernice. The 59-year-old judge recently returned to the popular series ahead of its 21st season, celebrating two decades on the small screen.

However, the popular show has been thrown into the spotlight in recent months following the scandal that saw the Italian dancer fall under scrutiny. Sherlock star Amanda Abbington accused Giovanni, 34, of being abusive towards her during their time on the show.

She claimed that she had endured post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the experience. On Monday (30th September) the BBC published the results of the investigation which involved the more serious allegations against him, but Abbington’s complaints of verbal bullying and harassment were upheld.

The corporation issued an apology to the actor following the outcome. On Friday (4th October) Craig appeared on Lorraine and confessed “it was like a weight off our shoulders”.

Christine Lampard who hosted the instalment was heard saying: “The BBC review was published online on Monday, under the claims of Amanda Abbington against her former dance partner Giovanni Pernice. What is the feeling among the Strictly camp now, post-review?”

She then asked: “Do you feel there is a difference?”

Craig responded: “Yes there is a difference. There is a weight has been lifted off our shoulders, as it was always hanging in the air. I am so pleased this investigation is over.”

“Now we can really move on and celebrate twenty years on the screen, as it really is a wonderful, wonderful show. It is just awful when thing’s like this do come along” he continued.

He revealed that the broadcaster has since put precautionary measures in place to protect the cast and crew, as well as prevent future incidents backstage.

“Of course, the BBC has put loads of things in place you know like chaperones – which we have had in the theatre for years. Especially in shows I have been in,” he expressed.

Craig referred to his performance in the musical Annie where he played Miss Hannigan, and said that it was a standard protocol, which was a step in the right direction for Strictly.

“I think it is a really good thing and it has brought to light that there someone should be in there. I think that it is great, so let’s move. Let’s celebrate Strictly for all the good,” concluded Craig.

This comes after the star faced backlash for saving Toyah Willcox during last weekend’s live show - as some felt she should have gone instead of her competitor.

Toyah, 66, went head to head with Tom Dean with head Judge Shirley Ballas saving her from elimination.
