The 56-year-old television presenter could be seen welling up as she spoke to Mark Woods, who has organised a last walk for his sickly pooch Walnut before the whippet will be put down tomorrow.
Ruth struggled to hold back the tears as her husband and co-host Eamonn Holmes said: “We’re finding it hard to keep it together.”
Mark appeared on This Morning via a video call after his Facebook post about Walnut’s last walk went viral and was shared nearly 800 times and received over 1,000 comments.
“They say never work with children and dogs. I’ve had him for 18 years. We used to live in London. I don’t have any children, so he is a child replacement. He used to come with me to work,” Mark said.
He invited people along for the poignant walk along the beach in Newquay, saying that it was for anyone who loved dogs or owned one.
Speaking about why Walnut was getting put down, Mark said: “It’s a bone of contention. He is not sick in terms of cancer. He can’t get off the floor. He can’t get off the sofa. He can’t feed himself, I have to hold him up everywhere.”

Mark, who has several other whippets, said that the youngest Charlie was the most affected by Walnut’s condition and even tried to get into the elderly dog’s basket with him.
The pet owner posted the message about Walnut's last walk on his Facebook page on Wednesday and since then Mark has received hundreds of well wishes from people around the world.
He revealed that some people were planning to walk their dogs around a similar time to Walnut’s final one as a tribute to the sickly pooch.

In his post, Mark wrote: "Walk with Walnut. Sadly I am having to have Walnut euthanised on Saturday 12th November and so we will be having a last walk together on his beloved Porth Beach at 9.30am.
“I would love it if dog lovers/owners and friends would join us for a celebration of Walnut on his favourite Porth Beach.
“He has had an incredible life and having reached the grand age of 18 is ready for his final sleep. Hope to see you on Saturday.”
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10.30am.
