Jill was scanning her items at the checkout of the village shop when she was challenged about wrongly winning the Frieda Fry memorial award for best chutney.
The 85-year-old was teased about how it must have been very embarrassing when she was “caught out” after being given a trophy and having pictures taken for the papers.
Much to the dismay of Jill, she hit back: “I felt terrible when I realised. I wasn’t caught out, it was just a silly mix-up.
“Carol [Tregorran] and I had both made chutney and she’d had some of my jam jars and Toby Fairbrother was careless and got them in a muddle.

“It wasn’t me. I didn’t do it on purpose. I wasn’t trying to cheat.”
The shop worker sarcastically said: “Cheat? Oh no no no Jill, I’m sure nobody thinks that. Well, not many people anyway, and accidents do happen I suppose.”
A furious Jill continued to claim how the whole incident was a huge misunderstanding and not intentional.
“Yes it was an accident and if anyone asks you make sure you tell them,” she said.

The discussion happened at The Village Shop
Carol could then be heard entering the store to join the discussion, but Jill’s apologies did not suffice.
The character who first came to Abridge in 1954 then said: “Well, never mind who’s fault it was, the question is what are we going to do about it?”
Listeners of the popular BBC Radio 4 soap were quick to join in the online “chutneygate” discussion.
“#TheArchers Jill got off lightly - when Milli Vanilli won a prize for other people's work the press crucified them,” joked one.

Jill claimed that Toby Fairbrother was careless
“Why is Carol being such a cow about this? Is she winding Jill up? #TheArchers,” asked another.
A third tweeted: “#TheArchers Jill, you *really* can't pin this on Toby I'm afraid. You are a great big cheat. Feel the shame Jill. Feel the shame.”
“#TheArchers If you have been affected by the issues raised by #Chutneygate please... continue listening. You are One Of Us,” posted a fourth.
The Archers continues tomorrow at 7pm on BBC Radio 4.
