Golden Globes 2016: Downton Abbey snubbed from top categories for the first time
DOWNTON ABBEY has been left out of the top Golden Globes fields for the first time in its history.
Joanne Froggatt is nominated but Downton Abbey does not receive a top Golden Globe nod
The ITV drama, which airs on PBS in North America, has always picked up a nod for either Best Miniseries or Best Series - Drama, but this time around has not been recognised for either.
It won the Miniseries field for its first run, while it was nominated for Series - Drama for seasons two, three and four.
This year, it has been completely overlooked in favour of newer shows - although Joanne Froggatt has still been nominated for Best Supporting Actress; a gong she won last time around.
Downton wasn't the only regular fixture to be left out of the Best Series - Drama shortlist: Homeland, House of Cards and Mad Men can also normally depend on a shout-out, but were all snubbed.
The show concludes on Christmas Day
Taraji P Henson is nominated for Empire
Empire, Mr Robot, Narcos and Outlander have been put forward instead, with Game Of Thrones the only previous nominee to be recognised again.
In Best Series - Comedy, the nominees are Casual, Mozart In The Jungle, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley, Transparent and Veep, with Froggatt's competition in the Supporting arena coming from Uzo Aduba (OITNB), Regina King (American Crime), Judith Light (Transparent) and Maura Tierney (The Affair).
Best Actor in a Drama Series nominees include Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Rami Malek (Mr Robot), Wagner Moura (Narcos), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan).
In the equivalent Comedy category, the nominees are Aziz Ansari (Master of None), Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in The Jungle), Rob Lowe (The Grinder), Patrick Stewart (Blunt Talk) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent).
Idris Elba is up for Luther
As for actresses, in Drama the final five are Catriona Balfe (Outlander), Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder), Eva Green (Penny Dreadful), Taraji P Henson (Empire) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).
Actresses in the Comedy field are Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex Girlfriend), Jamie Lee Curtis (Scream Queens), Julia Louis Dreyfus (Veep), Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) and Lily Tomlin (Grace & Frankie).
Other British hopefuls for TV include Idris Elba for Luther, David Oyelowo for Nightingale and Mark Rylance for Wolf Hall (all in Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie), plus Alan Cumming for The Good Wife and Damian Lewis for Wolf Hall (both Best Supporting Actor).
The Golden Globes take place on January 10, 2016.
