Richard Madeley reveals time he lost an entertainment gig

Good Morning Britain favourite Richard Madeley shared a heartfelt revelation about being dropped from a major TV project, while back on air for Tuesday's show with co-host Susanna Reid.

The experienced broadcaster, aged 68, delved into his professional setbacks during an interview with esteemed actor David Harewood, discussing not just the latter's impressive career and his struggles with mental health, but also a bitterly disappointing moment in his own career.

In a candid admission, Madeley described a personal experience after the topic of a recent tweet from Harewood surfaced about a role he lost despite initial approval.

Recollecting a similar incident, Richard disclosed: "The reason why I wanted you to talk about that a very similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago. I did a pilot for a big, big new entertainment show, I was told that it had gone well."

Continuing, he said with a sense of wry amusement: "We had got the commission, we got the pilot and we got a series of 30 and then they gave it to somebody else! So that's our life," followed by hearty laughter.

Harewood joined in the merriment, exclaiming: "They went somewhere else, Richard? You can't tell me they went somewhere else, you are a star!"

Susanna tried to steer the conversation back to David and his experiences shortly after Richard's emotive outing. Nevertheless, some viewers expressed their irritation at Madeley for seemingly overshadowing the guest's moment, turning the chat towards his own experiences, reports the Mirror.

Over on Twitter, fans expressed their annoyance at Richard's self-centred storytelling. One viewer vented: "Yet again, Richard makes it all about him!! So glad Susanna called him out live on air... not sure it was intentional but, Richard's bright red face sure noticed!!"

Another chimed in: "'Bringing it back to you David' brilliant."

A third exasperated fan commented: "Madeley!! Me me me f***in me!"

Richard omitted to name the TV show for which he had recorded pilots. Besides his role on Good Morning Britain, Madeley also took part in the 21st series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

In January 2021, Richard stepped in for Steph McGovern to host her Channel 4 programme, Steph's Packed Lunch. Beyond presenting, he has published several books, with his latest release titled Father's Day this year.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
