The Chase: Contestant gives wrong answer in cash builder but it's accepted

The Chase star Darragh Ennis left fans stunned after he reveals what goes on behind the scenes to make sure the show is fair.

Ennis first appeared on the show back in 2017, but impressed the bosses so much that he was offered the chance to become a new Chaser three years later. Now, he is a fan favourite, with many people tuning in to interviews with the star to hear more about how the show works.

When the quizzer appeared on JaackMaate's Happy Hour podcast, hosts Jack Dean and Stevie White questioned him about what goes on behind the scenes. One thing ITV viewers were curious to know is what happens if a contestant or even a chaser believes their answer is correct after being told it's wrong.

In a clip, which has gained more than 180,000 likes since being shared on TikTok, Jack asked: "Has any contestant ever contested an answer?" To which, Darragh explained: "Oh, all the time. That's perfectly fair. We have independent adjudicators on set all the time."

He continued: "There's a company called Beyond Dispute and a wonderful woman called Olivia does that. She's appointed to oversee everything. And if either side asks, you know, I want to get that checked. Then she, independent from the producers and the question setters verifies whether the answer is correct or not."

The hosts were baffled as Jack clarified: "They can just do that mid-recording?" Darragh confirmed it was as "everything has to be faired".

"We don't care how long it takes - it has to be fair and it has to be right," he continued. "We tell everybody as a contestant you're told if you're not happy with the question, if you think your answer is right and you're told it's wrong, say it straight away because we want the cut recording. It's a lot easier editing-wise to cut recording and then they go and check it."

The 43-year-old Irish entomologist and neuroscientist claims answers can be double-checked even when the contestants are against the clock and the same goes for the Chasers. But he says when someone contests an answer they are "rarely" wrong.

He added: "There's a question-setting team who have the horrible job of setting questions for us because we never stop complaining. We're awful. We really are.

"It's hard setting quiz questions. Sometimes, especially if you're not an expert in the subject, there can be a there can be a second answer. Brad has like a list of acceptable answers that he has to read through for some questions as people can have multiple names."

TikTok viewers took to the comments to praise the show for making sure it is fair for everyone. One user said: "Love that, sounds super fair," while another commented: "That is very interesting, the more you know."

A third commented: "Darragh is quickly becoming my favourite internet/media personality." Someone else penned: "I faced Darragh on the chase, lovely bloke. He’s right - the show gets stopped all the time to double-check answers."

The news comes after the Chaser revealed his foolproof tips for always getting the right answer for certain questions on the show. He explained a lesser-known quirk about two question topics on the ITV show - and how you can always get them right.
