Ellen DeGeneres announces ‘last season’

Comedian and former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has revealed when her comedy special about being “cancelled” will land on Netflix. The star will return for a final special two years after her eponymous talk show was axed following reports of a toxic work environment behind the scenes.

Ellen, 66, has revealed her last comedy show, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, will drop on Netflix on September 24. It comes after she told the audience on Ellen’s Last Stand… Up tour earlier this year that her final live sets were being filmed for the Netflix special before her departure from showbusiness.

In a statement, she said: “To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special.

“Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life,” she quipped, referring to her wife of 16 years, Portia de Rossi.

The Netflix logline for the project reads: “For the first time in six years, Ellen DeGeneres returns to the stage in her new comedy special Ellen Degeneres: For Your Approval. The final comedy special of her historic career, Ellen gets personal and reveals what she’s been doing since being ‘kicked out of show business.’

“From the mundane world of raising chickens and parallel parking to the harsh reality of becoming a brand-name celebrity, she goes deep into her stand-up roots and brings laughs through life’s most real and absurd realities.”

During one of Ellen’s shows back in July, which was held at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, one fan asked if the comedian would return to films or the theatre once the tour ended.

According to SFGate, Ellen admitted: “Um, no. This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”

Another fan suggested she could still reprise her iconic voice role as the forgetful fish Dory in the movies Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, but she insisted: “No, I’m going bye-bye, remember.”

During her stand-up event in Santa Rosa, Ellen admitted she can be “demanding and impatient and tough”, but added that she had been “kicked out of show business for being mean”.

“I am a strong woman. I am many things, but I am not mean,” she stated.

It comes after the Emmy-winning daytime talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, ended in May 2022 after nearly 20 years.

The show came to an end following reports detailing various allegations of misconduct and intimidation on set.

Ellen apologised on air and, after an internal investigation by WarnerMedia, three producers were fired.

Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval will be released exclusively to Netflix on September 24.
