Actress Rachel Shenton, best known for her role as Helen Herriot in Channel 5 hit show All Creatures Great and Small, is taking on a new project. The 36 year old will star in and write Gladstone Girls, a six-part scripted podcast series.

Described as a comedy drama, it tells the story of female workers in the Stoke-on-Trent potteries battling to save their factorys traditions from a new boss.

Set in a Gladstone pottery factory in 1972, the show features a cast including Adrian Rollins, Anna Madeley, and Dorothy Atkinson.

Shenton describes Gladstone Girls as a celebration of pottery inspired by her own family history, which includes "three generations of pottery women".

She told Masterpiece: "It is just a celebration of the potteries industry, really, of an industry that I don't think many people know much about, this entire industry that came from this tiny little place in the middle of England. We interviewed over a hundred pottery women, so it's based on true stories and real life. It's a skill that people don't know about much."

The series narrates the tale of these women who dedicate every Friday night to preparing for their big night out.

The factory morphs into a beauty parlour as they glam up, but their new floor manager, played by Adrian, aims to halt this Friday tradition, leading to protests from the women.

Rachel disclosed that she selected Anna to play the lead role because she's "fabulous", along with her All Creatures Great and Small co-star Dorothy Atkinson, reports the Mirror.

"The women were so tough, so strong, and so funny. There was a real sense of unity, camaraderie, community. So it's good fun, and it's about curlers, but actually it's about sticking together and standing up for what you believe in, and that feels relevant even now," Rachel further commented on Gladstone Girls.

She also expressed that she feels "protective of this story" as she wants the women portrayed in the show to be depicted in the "right way". The actress confessed she is "very proud" of Gladstone Girls, which is yet to have an official release date announced.
