HBO has finally given the green light to a series based on DC Comics' iconic superhero, Green Lantern.

The US network, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, has confirmed Lanterns will get an eight-episode, straight-to-series order.

Chris Mundy, of True Detective: Night Country and Ozark fame, will serve as showrunner, with Damon Lindelof and Tom King as executive producers.

Casting has not yet been confirmed, but the series will follow two heroes, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, who take up the Green Lantern mantle in the comics.

The interstellar investigators will be drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery involving a murder in the American heartland.

John is described as a new recruit, who’s taken under the wing of “Lantern legend” Hal Jordan, who was previously portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 blockbuster based on the character.

Following a branding reshuffle over at HBO, the superhero drama and other upcoming series are now labelled HBO Originals, meaning they will air on the network in addition to landing streaming platform Max.

Co-CEOs of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran said in a joint statement: “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm.

“John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with [the feature film] Superman.”

The latest announcement may come as a huge relief for comic book fans, who have been waiting since Lanterns was first announced in January 2023 for more updates.

It was listed amongst 10 other films and TV shows launching Gunn’s DC reboot, which also includes Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and a new Batman blockbuster.

Safran described the series as “a huge, HBO-quality event” and teased it’s “very much in the vein of True Detective”.

A Green Lantern series has been in development hell for some time, and a previous project helmed by Greg Berlanti and The CW’s Arrowverse co-creator Marc Guggenheim has since been scrapped.

It would have starred Treadstone’s Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott, the first-ever Green Lantern, alongside Finn Wittrock of American Horror Story fame as Guy Gardner.
