ITV viewers all say the same thing after Keir Starmer's Leader Interviews

Ahead of the general election, Keir Starmer was interviewed for ITV's Tonight programme but failed to impress some viewers after he received a mixed reaction online.

Keir Starmer gets emotional while talking about his mother

Keir Starmer received a mixed reception during his ITV interview on The Leaders programme with Paul Brand as viewers believed much of the discussion was centred around his family life.

He was the last of the main political leaders to be profiled ahead of the 2024 General Election and opened up about his upbringing as well as Labour’s plans for the country.

The interview opened up with Starmer discussing his childhood and becoming emotional while talking about his mother Josephine Barker’s debilitating battle with Still’s Disease.

He reflected: “When I was about 13, and mum was up at hospital very, very ill and my dad was up there with her, as he always was.

“Us kids were at home and he phoned through I picked up the phone … And he just said ‘I don’t think you’re mum’s going to make it.’”

The 61 year old fought back tears, as he continued: “I remember those words, I remember what that felt like.

“It was the first time it had directly impacted me in the sense that I thought mums not going to be here. She did pull through but that went through me.”

Starmer admitted: “Still goes through me, telling you today really impacted me.”

The Labour MP went on to reveal that his mother battled a debilitating illness called Still's Disease, a rare and incurable condition which causes painful swelling of joints and organs, that she lived with for more than 50 years. He went on to share she sadly died two weeks before he was elected a Member of Parliament.

While viewers were sympathetic many took to X and argued they wanted more insight on his policies for the country.

Taking to X, @Freddie84674 added: “Now going for the sympathy vote," while @Jackiew80333500 remarked: “Not interested in his personal life fgs!!!!”

A third viewer @MinnietheGeek: "But, HOW WILL HE LEAD THE COUNTRY?? That's all we need to know, thanks!"

@kaneshka00 tweeted: "Starmer is looking for sympathy vote. That's not good. @ITVTonight."

@goldfinch521 said: "We all have hard times. It shouldn't be necessary to bring this up before a General Election. What purpose does it serve?"
