Call the Midwife fans were worried that one iconic character wouldn't be returning to the BBC show - but it's now been confirmed that she will be back

Helen George on what the future holds for Trixie in Call The Midwife

Fans of Call the Midwife are worried that a beloved character may not be returning for the new series of the popular BBC drama.

Helen George, 40, has been playing the role of Trixie Franklin in the period drama since its inception in 2012.

However, in the most recent series, which aired earlier this year, Nurse Trixie left Poplar for a fresh start in America. This significant decision was made after her husband Matthew (played by Olly Rix) departed from Poplar and moved to New York to explore new business opportunities following his bankruptcy.

Matthew had also expressed doubts about Trixie's dedication to being a wife and stepmother to his son Jonty, as she was equally committed to her profession. After much contemplation and many tears, Trixie also left East London and relocated to the States to join her family as the series ended.

However, it seems that Trixie will be returning to Poplar in the upcoming season of Call the Midwife, which is scheduled to premiere at the start of 2025, following the annual Christmas special, reports MyLondon.

Helen has been seen on set filming scenes as Trixie, following the announcement that production for the new season has commenced.

The actress, who is one of the few remaining original cast members, was also spotted wearing a beige shirt and green skirt, which is believed to be part of her costume for the role.

Last month, the beloved actress Helen George delighted her Instagram followers with a behind-the-scenes selfie in full Trixie Franklin attire, tagging the official Call the Midwife account. The glamorous shot showcased Helen sporting her iconic blonde bob and a makeup look complete with striking lipstick.

Accessorising with a patterned turtleneck and vivid red nail polish, Helen's hand was adorned with an eye-catching diamond ring, sparking speculation that her character's husband might also make a comeback.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the Christmas special, which is set to be the final episode of the 1960s era before the show transitions into the 1970s.

"Series 14 is set in 1970, launching us into an exciting new decade," confirmed Heidi Thomas, the creator of the show. "We can't wait to bring you another season full of touching, exciting, emotional stories from Nonnatus House."

Call the Midwife returns on Christmas Day on BBC One.
