BBC’s hit comedy series Ghosts will finally make its long-awaited comeback to the network - but for a new audience.

After kicking off in 2019, the show’s fifth and final season aired in 2023 as part of the channel’s Christmas Day schedule.

Although fans were forced to say goodbye to the invisible residents of the Button House, the beloved show has kicked off production in Germany.

The hugely popular series, which also spawned a US remake, is set to gain a loyal fanbase worldwide after being adapted for the German audience.

BBC Studios confirmed filming is officially underway and will be directed by Erik Haffner.

The German version of Ghosts will follow a similar storyline to the UK and feature a stellar cast of German actors.

It will follow young couple Emma (Cristina do Rego) and Felix (Benito Bause), who inherit an old mansion and decide to turn it into a hotel.

Much like the beloved version, Emma suffers a near-death accident and suddenly starts to see ghosts.

According to the BBC, the hotel will also welcome “bizarre and chaotic roommates, such as the Neanderthal Urs (Jan van Weyde)".

It will also welcome "the Roman legionnaire Claudius (Max Giermann), the Countess Adelheid (Antje Widdra), and the feminist maid Griet (Meltem Kaptan)".

And viewers can also expect “insurance salesman Joachim (Sebastian Schwarz), the teacher Svenni (Sina Tkotsch) and the love-hungry poet Friedrich Dorn (Alexander Khuon)".

The mixed bunch of guests all “come from different eras and cause quite a stir in the couple's lives".

Showrunner Eva Holtmann stated: “The start of filming of Ghosts marks the beginning of a new, exciting chapter for BBC Studios Germany.

“For our first in-house produced series, we were able to win a fantastic ensemble that will fill the characters created by our team of writers Aylin Kockler and Yves Hensel with a lot of humour and emotions.”
