Derek Draper: Kate Garraway announces death of her husband
The Loose Women panel have paid tribute to Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper following his death. The ITV star took to social media on Friday afternoon to announce the sad news.
Panellist Kaye Adams addressed his passing during the latest instalment of Loose Women at the beginning of the show. After reading out a statement Kaye sounded extremely emotional as she said: “We have all been moved by Kate and the family’s journey over the last three or four years.
“So full of admiration for the way that they have dealt with the incredible challenges that they have faced. As I say, it’s the saddest of news.”
Echoing Kaye’s words, panellist Linda Robson shared Kate, Derek and their two kids were her neighbours for many years. She replied: “It is really sad because I knew them quite well.”
As Linda called them the loveliest family, Kaye continued to praise Kate as she added: “It’s such a personal difficulty that they experienced. Kate was able to raise her head and speak to the rest of the caring community out there.
“She was always aware of the many other people in this country who found themselves in a similar situation.”
Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver touched on Kate’s two ITV documentaries, Finding Derek and Caring for Derek, as she admired how the GMB star was able to highlight the role of carers during their darkest time as a family.
Kaye continued: “We can’t really say anymore, it’s so raw. Kate herself has said in her statement that she will have more to say in due course.
“It’s her story, of course, to tell. But, her most recent book was called The Strength of Love and my goodness, Kate you displayed the strength of love in a way that I could barely contemplate.

Derek contracted coronavirus back in 2020 and was left with long-term side effects from the virus. After being put into an induced coma, the 56-year-old was left with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and was unable to walk.
Over the years, Kate has openly spoken about her husband’s health and gave people an insight into the intense care Derek receives in her two documentaries.
In December last year, Derek suffered a cardiac arrest, which Kate detailed led to complications due to the damage inflicted by Covid.
Sharing an image of her husband on Instagram, she wrote: "I'm sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.
"As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.
"Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed."
“I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.
"Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."
Loose Women continues weekdays on ITV from 12:30pm.
