Ross Poldark (played by Aidan Turner) has had an elaborate and incredible journey throughout the five seasons.
As the show came to an end this evening, Poldark became engaged in a brutal sword fight with the French general he was pretending to conspire with.
Although Poldark has a great deal of experience as a swordsman, it looked like he had finally met his match.
However, the final moment of the battle left viewers utterly stunned, as Poldark's rival, George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) arrived just at the right moment.
The banker walked into the room with two pistols drawn, and shot Poldark’s foe, saving his life for the first time in their history.
Fans of the show were ecstatic at the turn of events, and began posting their praise on Twitter.
One wrote: “Go George!!!!!.”
Another exclaimed: “#Poldark. At last George #Warleggan does something good!!!!”
A third added: “Omg are my eyes deceiving me!! Ross saved by George.”(sic)
And one excited fan gushed: “WHAT DID I SAY. I SAID I WANTED ROSS AND GEORGE TEAMING UP AS RELUCTANT ALLIES. AND I GOT IT OH I'M SO HAPPY.”

Go George!!!!! #poldark
This was one of the last times Poldark saw George, as he went on to leave Cornwall, and indeed Poldark's life.
The touching final moments of the season saw Poldark’s wife Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson) announce she was pregnant with another child.
Recently, at the launch of the fifth season, Poldark actor Aidan spoke about the final scenes he shared with Eleanor.
He confessed: “It actually was pretty poignant - our last day was just myself and Eleanor doing some of the bedroom scenes.
“It was quite intimate and quite lovely, and seemed to make sense that it was just the two of us, I suppose.”
He went on to muse about the relationship the couple have built throughout the five seasons, and said: “They’ve overcome a lot of things, haven’t they?
“I think they’re in a good place by the end of the series. Yeah…”
Aidan then joked: “Or he dies!” - which, thankfully, fans now know is not true.
The final scene of the show saw Poldark walking to his ship once again, headed to London as the credits rolled.
Poldark concludes tonight at 8.30pm on BBC One.
