The Archers spoilers: Toby Fairbrother’s proposal to Helen Archer sends fans into meltdown
THE ARCHERS’ Toby Fairbrother’s grand plan left a sour taste in some viewers’ mouths as they certainly didn’t like the sound of what he was proposing to Helen Archer.
The Archers: Tom tells Natasha he knows about her debt
It happened as Toby (played by Rhys Bevan) unveiled his grand plan to concoct some milk gin on BBC radio soap The Archers.
Toby went to see cheesemaker Helen (Louiza Patikas) to ask if they could set up an arrangement whereby he could use her leftover whey to make the alcoholic drink.
Helen didn’t seem too keen on the idea as she probed Toby on how it would all work in reality.
However, while gin made from the distillation of whey is in fact a real things, many listeners appeared to have never heard about it.
No thanks
Some were repulsed by the idea and took to Twitter to comment.
“Tobes is not selling me on this milk gin.... #thearchers,” one opined.
while another declared: “MILK GIN???? With curdled lemon? No thanks #thearchers.”
“#TheArchers Toby is a moron. An utter moron. Milk gin.... yep, that'll be a best seller. #moron,” a third shared.
A fourth added: “Never heard of milk gin before. Never want to hear about it again #thearchers.”
“Milk gin? Yeah... no thanks. #thearchers,” a fifth opined.
Toby tried to win Helen over with his proposition but it was clear he hadn’t worked out the finer details.
He asked: “Two words. Milk gin. You know how well Scruff Gin has been doing.”
“Has it?” she questioned as he responded: “Oh yeah, it’s been going gangbusters.”
Toby continued: “So what I want to do is build on that with a very unique brand extension. How it would work is I’d take the whey that’s leftover from your cheesemaking…”
“Whey? All of it?” Helen shot back.
“No, some it. Maybe all of it. It depends. Then I’d distill it into a spirit and add specially selected botanicals,” Toby reasoned.
“Such as?" Helen questioned.
“I don’t know I’d have to work that out. Trial and error. I think it would make a brilliant gin.”
But Helen was concerned about how he would transport it and at the fact she had no idea how much she should be selling the whey for.
Toby replied: “We could work all that out. Honestly, I think I’m on to a winner here. There’s almost no one else doing this.”
“For a reason, probably,” Helen retorted. But before they could properly finish their conversation, some pigs were causing havoc as they escaped from a field.
The Archers continues tomorrow at 7pm on BBC Radio 4.
