Call the Midwife spoilers: Valerie in PRISON twist as she’s forced to make huge decision?
CALL THE MIDWIFE Nurse Valerie Dyer will be forced to make one of the most difficult decisions of her life on the BBC period drama in tonight’s season finale, and it could end very badly.
Call the Midwife: Jennifer Kirby reveals secrets of birthing scenes
It was only two weeks ago viewers were introduced to Valerie’s (played by Jennifer Kirby) grandmother on the BBC drama, a formidable force of nature called Elsie (Ann Mitchell).
It was also clear the elderly woman deeply loved her granddaughter and the pair shared a close bond.
But last week’s instalment revealed the horrifying truth Elsie is the secret backstreet abortionist in Poplar, and Valerie was left questioning everything after weeks of treating and losing women to botched procedures.
Tonight’s instalment will wrap everything up for yet another year at Nonnatus House, and fans are wondering if Valerie will turn her own flesh and blood in to the police.
What if there’s another twist in the storyline, and in trying to protect Elsie, Valerie keeps her secret from the police?
If found out, Valerie could lose her nurses’ license and even face her own sentence.
In a new interview ahead of the finale, Valerie star Jennifer has teased what’s to come.
“Valerie’s devastated,” the actress said. “Everything she thought she knew about her life has been turned upside down.
“It’s not just that Elsie has unwittingly hurt these women, it’s also the fact that Val has been lied to for a long time.
“The person she trusts most in the world hasn’t been truthful.”
Val knows that Elsie was meaning to help
Teasing the choice is not as cut and dry as some might believe, Jennifer went on to say her character will suffer a real dilemma.
“Val knows that Elsie was meaning to help,” the star said. “And that, if the laws were different, they wouldn’t be in this horrible situation.
“And the women wouldn’t have been injured in this way.
“Although Val has had no part in what’s happened, she feels great guilt.”
What’s more, Valerie continues to struggle when she’s cornered by a local resident in the East London suburb.
The person launches into a rant claiming Valerie is being disloyal to her family, but luckily the midwife’s good friend Lucille (Leonie Elliot) is there to help.
Jennifer explained Valerie will need her friends more than ever on the show now, and Lucille and Trixie Franklin (Helen George) will step up in her time of need.
The case will be brought to court in this week’s series finale, will Elsie be found guilty and sent to prison? Or will Valerie find a way to support her?
Also in the episode, the nuns and midwives attend a charity ball, so while there will be some serious themes the characters will still find a bit of time to lighten the mood and let their hair down.
Call the Midwife concludes tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
