A travel blogger has blasted the popular Greek holiday destination Mykonos as “lacking authenticity” and “feeling like Disneyland”.

Jess, a travel blogger made the claims in a video where she gave honest reviews of five Greek islands, giving a verdict that might surprise casual travel enthusiasts.

Jess said: “I think Mykonos is on most people’s list when they think of Greek island hopping, but for me it lacked the authenticity that the other islands have and it felt a little bit like Disneyland.”

Mykonos, known as the islands of the winds, has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, becoming a go-to travel destination for footballers and celebrities.

In recent years, it has seen A-listers such as Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney visit to enjoy the island’s luxurious offerings.

But its popularity and fame have caused the prices to soar on the island with a recent Which? survey criticising the exorbitant cost of staying in Mykonos Town. The island is notorious for its steep prices, with the average cost of a hotel room reaching nearly £200 per night.

Popular destination Santorini did not perform much better than Mykonos in Jess’ review.

The island, made famous partly by being the backdrop to films such as Mamma Mia, has seen tension in recent years as locals struggle to cope with the island’s significant popularity.

Popular photo spots have seen large queues and people turning up with several outfits as they try to get the perfect “Instagram shot” to provide an everlasting memento of their trip.

Jess said: “It is a really expensive island and I actually found the food scene quite disappointing. You’re often paying for the views rather than the quality of the food.”

Jess put Santorini and Mykonos in the same category based on how expensive and popular they are but did highlight one crucial difference.

Telling the 54,000 TikTok followers of her account @wherejesstravels, she said: “Despite not loving Mykonos, I do really like Santorini. I’ve visited twice and it is such a beautiful island.”

The less well-known island of Milos fared much better in Jess’ review. Jess said of the destination: “It is a volcanic island known for its beautiful beaches, I absolutely loved it here, it is my favourite place in Greece.”

The Greek beauty spot, just 94 miles northwest of Santorini, has a handful of singular natural landscapes contributed by volcanic activity, mysterious rock formations, curious soil colours and numerous jaw-dropping beaches.

Santorini and Milos share similar landscapes and geology. But for a long time, Greeks have avoided visiting Milos because of its reputation for being too industrial. Since the Neolithic era, the island's main industry was mining.

However, its stunning beaches twinned with beautiful, traditional architecture, make it the perfect holiday destination for those looking for the perfect “Instagram shot” made famous by Santorini - but without the crowds.
