Standing in Ukraine is a creepy site that looks like something straight out of a horror film. The Pripyat Amusement Park was abandoned before it was ever opened, and it is full of rides that have never been ridden.

The theme park was a victim of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster tragedy that struck the nearby city of Pripyat, where the park is. The amusement park was meant to open in May of 1986, however people in the area were forced to evacuate before the big day due to the disaster that struck just a few kilometres away.

The theme park still had festive decorations on the brand new rides, ready for the grand opening that never happened. Practically untouched for the past forty years, most of the attractions remain intact, and the Ferris Wheel is now a key part of the outer Chernobyl skyline.

Thrillseekers mourn the theme park they never had, leaving stuffed animals in the carts. The theme park also hosts bumper carts, which have almost entirely been taken over by nature.

Visitors have been warned against going to the site, as the area under the Ferris wheel has some of the highest levels of radiation.

The concrete areas are mostly safe in the theme park, but other attractions also contain varying levels of radiation - which can be harmful if engaged with for too long.

The attraction was initially built to celebrate 1986 May Day, four days after the nuclear disaster happened, and was meant to be a fun leisure activity for the 50,000 residents who once called the town home.

Photojournalist Anton Petrus, who is also a tourist guide for the area, captured the rusting park as it was a unique place.

"None of the rides at the park have ever been ridden," he told The Sun."For the past 30 years, the park has just been rusting in the rain.

"When I first visited five years ago the first thing I thought was, 'this looks like our plant after humanity disappears'. Everywhere I looked there were overgrown trees and cracked concrete, it was completely abandoned – it was a very strange spectacle.

"Pripyat is the worst place I've ever been – but it's a very unique place for photographers."

Petrus isn't the only person who has shown interest in the creepy park. It has also featured in a number of TV shows, and in video games such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
