An incredible new £2.3 billion train station is set to bring an end to the traffic chaos in a major European city. A new station will open in Florence which will improve train journeys across Tuscany.

The new Firenze Belfiore Station is expected to alleviate congestion at Firenze Santa Maria Novella and will become Florence's main transport hub when it opens in 2028.

Designed by Foster + Partners and engineered by Arup, the station will be situated in one of Florence's historic quarters, enhancing passenger flow and improving transport connections both within the city and across the country.

Spanning 47,000 square meters over four levels, the station will feature a concourse and a platform level located 25 metres underground.

It will also include a large urban park with an entrance facing a public square, an underground bus station, and parking facilities.

A model of the station reveals a structure covered by a steel and glass roof, which will extend across all four floors. The design incorporates gaps in the roof to allow natural light to illuminate the concourse and other areas.

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana boss Gianpiero Strisciuglio said: “This is a very important moment for Florence, Tuscany and the mobility of the entire country.

“This work will improve the quality of public transport, speed up connections and separate the flow of traffic.

“In this way, we will be able to increase slots for passenger and goods trains along Italy’s main train lines.”
