A pretty market town in Spain known for its rich history and traditional Spanish architecture has been named the “best” place for British expats to relocate.

Albox, a small town located in the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain has been witnessing a growing community of expats, particularly British residents.

The town has roots that stretch back to the medieval period, with influences from both Moorish and Christian cultures.

Historically, the area was important for agriculture, particularly olive groves and almond farming. The town's narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and charming plazas reflect its Andalusian heritage.

A key cultural site in the town is the Church of Santa María, a 16th-century structure that stands as a central landmark.

Many of the properties in the town, which has a population of 11,600, have views of olive groves, orchards and the rolling valleys.

Murphy Stevens, Property Specialist at Almeria Homes told Mail Online: “It is a traditional working Spanish town of which a small percentage are foreign residents.

“The town has many facilities and services you would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools, and a 24-hour medical centre.

“Albox has the perfect all-year round temperate climate, as does the whole of the Costa Almeria with temperatures rarely falling below 18C.”

It has been reported that an average price (all averages based on three-bed properties) is €275,000 (£232,000).

Local services, businesses, and even social clubs have adapted to accommodate the growing foreign population, with English-speaking doctors, shops, and other amenities readily available.

The town hosts several traditional festivals, including the annual "Romería de la Virgen del Saliente," a religious pilgrimage held in honor of the Virgin of Saliente, the patron saint of Albox. This pilgrimage attracts thousands of people who walk or ride to the nearby monastery on the hill of Monte Roel.

It is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the provincial capital, Almería, and is well-connected by road.

The nearest airports are Almería Airport and Murcia-Corvera Airport, both of which provide flights to major European cities.
