New weather maps show a North African plume crashing into Britain twice in days.

WXCharts has forecast a heatwave to hit the UK on June 24 and 25, bringing with it high temperatures and clear skies.

Temperatures will be highest in central Scotland (Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William) and Northern Ireland (Derry, Belfast) where it will be between 22C and 25C.

It will also be warm in north and south Scotland (Wick, Edinburgh, Dumfries), the north of England (Newcastle, Manchester), and Wales (Cardiff, Conwy) with highs of between 20C and 22C.

The Midlands (Birmingham, Milton Keynes) and the southwest of England (Plymouth, Bournemouth) will be between 19C and 21C.

The East of England (Norwich, Ipswich) and the southeast (Brighton, Canterbury) will be the coldest part of the country with highs between 14C and 19C.

The Met Office said of the period: “A change to cloudier weather with outbreaks of rain, these most prevalent in the west of the UK, is expected to be well underway by the start of the forecast period.

“However, this may not last too long, as it continues to look increasingly likely that a drier, warmer, and settled spell will begin to develop later this coming weekend, and into the following week.”

Met Office five-day forecast

Tonight:

Showers across Scotland and central England gradually fade, turning dry. Cloudy in most places, staying mild but turning chillier under clear skies for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Wednesday:

Cloudy to start the day in the east and south with the odd light showers. Breezy across northern Scotland but elsewhere dry with sunny spells where it will feel warm.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Largely dry with sunny spells for most, although a few showers possible. Some rain in the north on Friday. Feeling warmer in the sunshine with light winds.
