UK heatwave to come to crashing end as mercury set to plunge as low as 4C

EXCLUSIVE: Britain's heatwave looks set to come crashing to an end with the mercury plummeting as low as 4C for some parts of the UK in a matter of days.

UK weather: Met Office forecast as June heatwave persists

Temperatures could sink as low as 4C in parts of the UK at the weekend as the June heatwave comes crashing to an end in a few hours' time. The UK Health Security Agency issued yellow heat health alerts across most of England this week as the mercury was forecast to hit peaks of 31C.

But the scorching heat looks set to end soon as a cold front moves in from the northwest, according to the Met Office.

Stephen Dixon, a spokesperson for the forecaster, told Express.co.uk overnight temperatures could be fairly low for the time of year this weekend, with the lowest temperatures likely to be around 4C in rural parts of Scotland or Wales.

He said: "The set-up for the weekend’s weather is for a mixture of sunshine and showers for many, with the more frequent showers generally in the north of the UK, though there will be drier spells at times, though temperatures will remain slightly below average for the time of year for many."

Mr Dixon said overnight temperatures could be into the low double figures for many later in the weekend.

The Met Office's spokesperson said a cold front from the northwest will gradually move southeast on Thursday (June 27), heralding a change in the dominant weather regime and bringing daytime temperatures into the low-to-mid 20s Celsius for many.

He continued: "In addition, Thursday will be a breezy day for much of the country, with added rain for those in the north and northwest, with some unseasonably high winds for parts of Northern Ireland and northwest Scotland."

Weather maps generated by WX Charts using MetDesk data show minimum temperatures into next week of 11C in London, 10C in Newcastle, 12C in Manchester and 8C in Edinburgh.

This compares to minimum temperatures of 16C in London, 14C in Newcastle, 16C in Manchester and 11C in Edinburgh at midday today (June 26), according to WX Charts.

A separate map showing the difference between forecast temperatures and those expected for the time of year shows the mercury down by about two degrees Celsius for much of the UK at 6am on July 2.
