A pub has apologised after a quiz team "callously mocked" Jews days after two people were stabbed in north London. Team members reportedly called themselves "Golders Green should be Golders Greed" at The Crown at Boston Spa's quiz last week.

Nothing was apparently said at the time, but a local heard about it from a family member who was at the quiz and they subsequently complained. The unnamed person told the pub in West Yorkshire they felt "ashamed" to call the Crown their local after it emerged staff accepted the name as an entry in the quiz and failed to object when it was announced as the winner, according to the Telegraph.

The same publication quotes them as saying: "This was absolutely outrageous and is both insensitive and racist towards innocent British Jews (many of whom are your customers).

"For your information - I am not Jewish, and I have no connections. But I am a decent person. How was this allowed in our local pub? Which member of staff felt this insensitive and damaging team name was acceptable?"

They added: "This type of public victimisation perpetuates ill feeling and alienation towards a minority group. To be blunt, it incites hatred.

"The Crown is clearly not an inclusive establishment. What Jew could ever feel welcome or safe there. Shameful!"

A manager from the pub said it was reviewing what happened with the quiz team and staff to make sure more care is taken over quiz team names in future.

He told the Telegraph: "We are very sorry that this team name caused offence and distress. The name should not have been accepted and we take concerns about discrimintation and inclusivity very seriously."

The Express has also approached The Crown for comment.

Suspect, Essa Suleiman, 45, is accused of trying to kill Shloime Rand, 34, and Norman Shine, 76, during a knife rampage through the streets of the north London suburb on April 29.

As Mr Suleiman appeared in court for the first time on May 1, it was revealed he is also accused of attempting to murder a man he had known for around 20 years, Ishmail Hussein, at his home in Southwark in the hours before the Golders Green attacks.

Mr Suleiman is being held in custody until a hearing at the Old Bailey due on May 15.
