As temperatures start to climb across Britain later this month, storage specialists are cautioning homeowners that typical loft practices could silently destroy valuable household possessions. From cherished family photo albums to costly electronics, numerous people unwittingly keep heat-sensitive items in loft areas where temperatures can rocket during spring and summer.

Chris Hutton, storage specialist at self storage firm Adam's Selfstore, said many homeowners fail to appreciate just how extreme loft temperatures can get once milder weather sets in. "Most people think of lofts as harmless extra storage space, but during warmer periods they can become incredibly hot and poorly ventilated.

"That kind of heat build-up can quietly damage belongings over time without homeowners noticing until it's too late."

Chris has identified the everyday household items Brits should steer clear of storing in lofts during warmer spells.

Items you should never store in the loft during hot weather.

Printed photos and photo albums

"Photos are one of the most commonly damaged items we come across during loft clear-outs. Heat and moisture fluctuations can cause fading, warping and deterioration surprisingly quickly, especially with older prints."

Electronics and old tech

Unused laptops, gaming consoles, TVs and chargers are equally vulnerable.

"Heat can damage internal components, screens and batteries over time. People often store old electronics in the loft intending to use or sell them later, only to find they no longer work properly."

Important documents

Passports, legal paperwork, mortgage documents and certificates should all be kept away from loft storage.

"Paper absorbs moisture very easily. Combined with heat changes, that can lead to curling, mould spots and faded ink."

Candles

Candles and wax-based products can rapidly soften or warp in elevated temperatures. "Even if candles don't fully melt, heat can ruin their shape, texture and fragrance."

Wooden furniture

Wood responds significantly to temperature and moisture fluctuations. "We regularly hear from people who stored sentimental furniture in lofts and later discovered splitting, warping or weakened joints."

Vinyl records

Vinyl collections are particularly vulnerable in hot loft spaces. "It doesn't take extreme heat for records to begin warping, and once that damage happens it's usually permanent. For collectors, storing vinyl in a loft during summer can be a very expensive mistake."

Chris advises homeowners undertaking a spring or summer declutter should consider carefully before using lofts for long-term storage. "If something is sentimental, valuable or sensitive to heat, the loft usually isn't the safest place to keep it long-term."
