M25 traffic: Tragedy on major UK motorway as man dies in horror lorry crash

Two men were hit by a lorry as they stood on the hard shoulder of the M25 in the early hours of this morning.

A man has died after being hit by a lorry as he stood on the hard shoulder of the M25 near the Dartford Crossing in the early hours, police have said.

The road has been closed between Junction 29 for the A127 and Junction 30 at the A13 after the incident on Sunday which involved a lorry and two men.

Officers from London's Metropolitan Police, paramedics and National Highways Traffic Officers have been at the scene, according to National Highways.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said: "Police were called to the scene of a collision between a lorry and pedestrians stood on the hard shoulder of the M25 clockwise between J29 and J30 on Sunday (September 8) at 3.56am.

"Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service paramedics and treated two men."

They added that despite the best efforts of the emergency services one of the two men died at the scene.

45 minute long delays on approach, National Highways warns

In its latest update on X National Highways said: "The M25 clockwise remains closed between J29 Upminster and J30 Thurrock/Dartford. This is due to a serious collision in the early hours of this morning.

"Police are still investigating the scene. There are 45 minute delays on approach. Please allow extra journey time."

Traffic jam extends back to J28 with 20 minute long delays

Traffic is backed up on the M25 clockwise between J28 and J29.

Normal traffic conditions are expected between 12.45pm and 1pm today, according to National Highways.

It says there are currently delays of 20 minutes against expected traffic.

Four lanes are closed, National Highways says

Four lanes are closed on the stretch with the route expected to clear between 5pm and 5.15pm today.

Closure now expected until 5pm, National Highways says

The Romford Recorder reports National Highways as stating the M25 closure will now continue until 5pm.

Section of M25 to be closed 'throughout the morning'

National Highways has said on its X account that the section of the M25 affected will be closed throughout the morning.

Met Police appealing for dash cam footage and witnesses

Any witnesses or those with dash cam footage are asked to call the Met Police on 101 or tweet @MetCC quoting CAD 1299/08SEP.

National Highways issues diversion route

Motorists are being advised by National Highways to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol on road signs and allow extra journey time.

The diversion route is as follows: Exit the M25 J29 on to the A127; exit at the next roundabout and take the 4th exit on to the A128; travel on the A128 towards Orsett; at Orsett Cock roundabout, take the 4th exit on to the A13 then travel on the A13 westbound and rejoin the M25 at J30.

Four people involved in collision, London Ambulance Services says

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service has said it was called at 3.59am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision on the M25 at J29 near Upminster.

They added: "We sent a number of resources to the scene including ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer.

"Sadly one patient died at the scene. A second patient was taken to hospital while two further patients were treated and discharged at the scene."

Clockwise carriageway is closed, National Highways says

National Highways' latest information on the M25 says the route is closed clockwise between J29 (Romford) and J30 (South Ockenden/Grays) "due to a collision involving a lorry and a car".

No arrests, Scotland Yard says

Scotland Yard has said in its statement that no arrests have been made but there have been road closures in place.
