Industry experts say this will be one of the UK's worst ever harvests and could lead to a shortage of a number of products.

The UK could be hit with a beer shortage as adverse weather threatens farmers' wheat crops this autumn.

Farmers have warned that their wheat crops could take a 20 percent hit as the UK prepares for one of the worst harvests the country has ever seen.

This could result in a shortage of beer, as well as other products like bread and cereals.

Not only that, but this could also make the UK more reliant on foreign imports of these goods.

Industry experts say this year's harvest will be one of its three worst since records began in 1983.

A harvest of about 10-12million tons of wheat is expected, and 18 percent down on last year.

Speaking to The Sun, wheat farmer Roger Palmer, 66, said: “There’s no doubt there will be a shortage.”

Farmer Charles Goadby, of Nuneaton, said it was an “absolute nightmare”.

Tom Lancaster, a farming analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) described 2024 as "a year to forget."

He said: “The recent benign summer has failed to make up for six months of seemingly endless rain over the winter, the effects of which are now becoming apparent.

“More than most, farmers are on the front line of climate change, and this is what that looks like. Extreme weather is already feeding through to higher food bills and a greater reliance on imports."

Martin Lines, farmer and chief executive of the Nature Friendly Farming Network, has called on the Government to increase its support for farmers.

"I don’t want to see another like it again. Extreme weather is making farming harder and it’s the main threat to our food security.

"Farmers need support in preparing for and coping with droughts and floods."
