A well-known former BBC presenter has revealed how much he was paid compared to his colleagues - and claims he had to take on overtime while working at the public broadcaster.

Gareth Barlow, 34, a former regular on the show's News programme, told The Sun that he was paid significantly less than other well-known presenters at the company, inlcuding disgraced Huw Edwards.

In August 2023, Mr Barlow, who is currently employed by Sky News, announced his departure after a decade of service to the company.

He has now confessed that in addition to his highly respected role, he worked overtime to boost his income.

BBC executives paid the TV star a little more than £50,000 for his role as an SBJ senior broadcast journalist, he says, which pales in comparison to the hefty wage packets of the likes of Naga Munchetty and Huw Edwards.

He told the publication: "I won't comment on my current situation as Sky itself has a right to privacy with regards to its commercial contracts.

"However, the BBC is publicly funded so I'll share those details. When I left my staff position in 2021 I was an SBJ-senior broadcast journalist.

"I was paid just over £50,000 a year. I did do some overtime to earn some more".

Gareth's take-home pay is significantly less than some of his fellow presenters.

The BBC's annual report revealed Huw Edwards was paid more than £475,000 by the corporation last year before he resigned and left the corporation following the explicit photos furore. Meanwhile morning news presenter Naga Munchetty takes home between £345,000 - £349,999.

The veteran newsreader Mr Edwards was paid between £475,000 and £479,999 for the year 2023/24 for 160 presenting days, BBC One news specials, election specials and other television programming, according to the BBC's annual report.

Mr Barlow's former colleague Edwards admitted to three counts of creating indecent images of children, and it was later disclosed that he had been arrested over serious allegations in November 2023 - while he was still employed at the BBC.

He confessed to possessing 41 indecent pictures of children - some of which were category A, the most severe type of child abuse images.
