Property prices continue to be at a premium across the country, meaning lofts continue to be utilised to increase space.

As a result, there are many thousands of properties across the UK with Velux windows - windows in the roof that can crack open.

But it seems that many are unaware of a clever little design feature that has totally revolutionised the way they have been cleaning them - namely by stopping the need to somehow scramble onto the roof.

TikToker Chris Watkins said: "Have you ever wondered what that little hole is for on a Velux window? Well if you open the handle on the Velux, open it from the top down, you’ll find a little bolt.

"Then you fold the window all the way around, slot the bolt into the hole and now the outside window is on the inside, held in place so that you can clean it with ease. Genius."

In the comments section, fellow TikTokers marvelled at the little trick.

"Saves you climbing on the roof," said one.

"Me jumping out of bed at 23.30pm to check mine haha," said another.

"I just ran off and cleaned mine mid-TikTok," said another happy Velux owner.

The Velux website confirms that this is indeed the function of the hole in its windows.

It said: "To clean the outer pane, rotate the sash 180 degrees.

"The sash must be secured in position by sliding the barrel bolt into the bushing at the bottom of the side frame. This safety feature leaves both hands free for cleaning."

The website also gives recommendations on what to use to clean the outside pane.

It added: "Clean the pane with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth/chamois leather/nonabrasive sponge or a clean, non-metal window squeegee.

"Clean water will normally be sufficient for cleaning the pane. Ordinary, non-abrasive household cleaners can also be used. Soft water is best for cleaning panes.

"Therefore, in hard-water areas add a small amount of detergent to soften the water or wipe off all excess water after cleaning."
