When you think of cleaning sometimes we often forget certain appliances such as the inside of our fridge, the dishwasher or even the washing machine.

While many of us struggle to find time to clean our homes in general, experts have warned we should be cleaning our washing machines at "least once a month" to avoid any nasty bacteria building up.

Not only is keeping your home appliances clean essential for maintaining a hygienic living environment but it can also ensure that your items last for a long time. Especially as we use them every day.

To help consumers avoid their appliances becoming unhygienic, experts at home appliance and electronics manufacturer Hisense UK have shared the dangers of neglecting our washing machines and how we can clean them.

According to cleaning product manufacturer Dr Beckmann, in one load of underwear, there could be up to 100 million E. coli bacteria in your washing machine.

So, our washing machines must be cleaned at least once a month. Regular maintenance includes running an empty hot water cycle with vinegar or a specialised washing machine cleaner to remove any detergent buildup and odours.

This monthly cleaning wash must be run at a high temperature (around 60̊C), as cold cycles do not kill off mould and bacteria.

The draws also need to be pulled out and cleaned with an anti-bacterial wipe, as the leftover detergent from previous washes can lead to a build-up of gunk if left to fester.

Finally, the pros said to check and clean the drain filters as water tends to collect at the bottom of your machine, which omits a pungent odour if left for a while.

Do this by either using the built-in drain hose or lowering the end into a large bowl, letting the water run into it.

Or if your machine doesn’t have a hose, you’ll have to unscrew the filter and catch the water in a bowl below, ensuring towels are placed around the machine to avoid any spillages.
