A family had a lucky escape after bricks fell off a set of £595,000 new-build homes - narrowly missing a woman who was hanging out her washing.

Firefighters were called to the row of four-bed homes when huge coping stones smashed through a patio set in a family's garden in Keynsham, near Bristol.

Locals said it "could have been a fatality" and rescue workers were able to "just lift off" the stones which appeared to have been stuck onto the outside of the home.

The new build homes were created by developers Hawkfield Homes and are understood to have been completed in 2022.

One local, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “She was putting the washing out at the time.

“It could have been a fatality.”

The resident said the fire service came to remove other loose stones, using long ladders to get to the roof.

He said: “Some of them apparently you could just lift off.

“It is a pretty serious thing for a new house to fall apart so soon."

Another resident in the development - called Courthouse Villas and the Walk - said she had a survey conducted of her own new build home before moving in.

“It all seemed okay”, she said, and added: “Nothing has fallen off yet.”

Avon Fire & Rescue Service crews were called out on June 29.

An Avon Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “On arrival, firefighters found that slabs and masonry had fallen from the roof of a residential property and used a turntable ladder to inspect and remove any remaining loose building material.

“A cordon was put in place to ensure safety at the scene.”

The development of nine homes on the site of the old police station was granted planning permission four years ago, according to reports.

Online listings show a four-bed home on the street was up for sale for £595,000.

The developer, Hawkfield Homes, had had concerns expressed to it by an estate agent (Image: SWNS)

Hawkfield Homes is part of Land Promotions Ltd which appointed an administrator in November 2023.

The administrators have since said unsecured claims of more than £10m are “not currently anticipated” to be paid.

An estate agent, who worked with Hawkfield Homes, expressed concern houses had been left unfinished and businesses left out of pocket.

Hawkfield Homes did not respond to a request for comment.
