London's Metropolitan Police has taken control of the investigation as officers descended on several areas of London. A man has now been arrested.

Clifton Bridge: Police share update after human remains found

A man has been arrested in Greenwich, south-east London after human remains were found near Clifton Bridge in Bristol.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said on Friday night: "A man, aged 36, was arrested at an address in Greenwich early on Friday, 12, July. He has been taken into custody where he remains. This is not the same man we are appealing for."

A crime scene was also in place in west London with detectives from the Metropolitan Police now leading the investigation after the human remains were found in suitcases dumped in Bristol.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but both are believed to be men.

The results of one post-mortem examination came back "inconclusive", while a second post-mortem examination remains ongoing. The remains were discovered on Wednesday evening after police were called to reports of a man with a suitcase acting suspiciously on the bridge.

Neighbour described two men as a 'nice couple'

Martha, a resident who lives next door to the two men, said: "I have been living here for 11 years. They were a very nice couple, very polite, nice, quiet."

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "One's called Paul. They were just lovely guys."

Two men at Shepherd's Bush property named locally

Neighbours have named two men who lived at the address police were searching on Friday in Scotts Road, Shepherd's Bush, as Paul and Albert.

Rebecca, who lives opposite the couple, said: "I've been here for 26 years so they've been here my whole life.

"They seemed quiet, they seemed happy, cheerful, waving at everyone. The smaller one, Albert, rode a bike."

She said police "smashed the door down" at the address early on Friday morning, adding: "All I heard was that this morning my mum was up at 4.30am.

"My mum woke up to dogs barking, and she came out and there's policemen dressed in riot gear going into the building."

Man arrested in south east London

A person has been arrested in Greenwich, south-east London.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said on Friday night: "A man, aged 36, was arrested at an address in Greenwich early on Friday, 12, July. He has been taken into custody where he remains. This is not the same man we are appealing for."The spokesman declined to reveal what the man had been arrested on suspicion of.

The private ambulance is understood to have arrived at the scene in Shepherd's Bush at 6.30pm.

Student describes seeing blood on pavement near Clifton Suspension Bridge

University of Bristol student Reece Wright told the BBC he had been walking near the bridge with his girlfriend on Wednesday evening.

He said: "As we were walking along and got towards the other end, we thought we could see blood on the pavement of the bridge.

"As we kept walking further along, we went down and turned and heard a commotion behind us and we saw a cyclist chasing after a man who was just running away.

"He was making a lot of noise. They stopped and the guy managed to get away."

Mr Wright said one of the suitcases, which was blue, had two wheels broken off and "red stuff which we now know to be blood leaking out of the side near the zip, it was quite graphic".

Witness overheard innocent bystander ask men whether there were bodies in the suitcases

A witness has described seeing two men with suitcases in the Clifton area of Bristol on Wednesday evening.

Giles Malone told ITV News West Country he had been waiting for an Uber near The Mall pub when he saw two men lifting suitcases across the road shortly after 10.30pm.

He said: "We were stood there waiting for our car and a man and another man got out of another car across the street and they were lifting these suitcases across the road for some reason, right by us.

"Another lady started to help them and the lady who was helping them said, 'These are the heaviest suitcases I've ever lifted - what's in them, bodies'?"

Taxi driver picked suspect up from pub in Bristol, reports suggest

It is understood the suspect at the centre of the police manhunt was picked up by a taxi near The Mall pub in Clifton before getting out of the vehicle on the Leigh Woods side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a distance of about 0.4 miles or 644 metres.

Footage shows crime scene in west London

The latest footage shows police at the crime scene in Shepherd's Bush, west London.

In a series of clips forensics officers can be seen outside a property in Scotts Road with police guarding a cordon at the scene as the sound of a helicopter can be heard in the background.

What is known so far?

Human remains were found in two suitcases near the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol on Wednesday night.

Police were called to reports of a man with a suitcase acting suspiciously on the bridge.

He arrived at the bridge in a taxi and was challenged by members of the public after one of the suitcases was seen to be leaking blood.

The man fled the scene and made off in the direction of Leigh Woods, leaving the suitcase behind.

Police arrived 10 minutes after the call and discovered that the suitcase, along with a second located a short distance from the bridge.

The taxi had been seized and its driver was helping officers with the investigation.

The suspect is thought to have travelled to Bristol from London earlier that day.

Avon and Somerset Police released two pictures of the man, showing a black man with a beard, wearing a black Adidas baseball cap, black jeans, a black jacket and black trainers with thick white soles and carrying a black backpack.

Neighbour describes police descending on street in early hours

A resident from Shepherd's Bush has suggested the police descended on Scotts Road early this morning.

Anthony Priest, 85, a local from the Scott's Road area in Shepherd's Bush, said: "I heard them all tearing down here in the early hours of the morning.

"I heard a police car coming down, with lights flashing. It must have been about half past three."

Public warned not to approach suspect

The police have warned the public not to approach the suspect if they see him.

Deputy Asst Commissioner Andy Valentine from the Met said: "Do not approach him.

"We recognise this has caused significant concern to residents in the Clifton area and will cause concern among those who live and work in west London.

"Extra officers will be on patrol in the area over the coming days and I would encourage anyone with any concerns to speak to them."

Aerial images show experts in blue suits at the scene

Aerial images taken from footage filmed by Sky News shows officers in blue forensics suits outside a property in Scotts Road, Shepherd's Bush, west London.

The focus of the manhunt has turned to the capital, where extra officers are on patrol, according to the Met Police.

Suspect travelled from London to Bristol, police say

The man at the centre of the police hunt is believed by police to have travelled from London to Bristol on the day the remains were dumped near Clifton Suspension Bridge. That's a distance of about 119 miles.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine, who is leading the investigation for the Met, said: "Over the last 48 hours we have been working extremely closely with colleagues from Avon and Somerset.

"This work leads us to believe the man we need to speak to travelled to Bristol from London earlier on Wednesday evening.

"We are drawing on resources from across the Met to find and apprehend the suspect and I would urge anyone who believes they see him, or who knows of his whereabouts, to call 999 straight away."
